A zabuton is a broad, padded floor mat used beneath your sitting area. It gives your legs, knees or ankles a softer surface while a separate zafu cushion or bench can provide the seat height you prefer.

If you already have a favourite meditation cushion, you may be looking for the floor layer that sits beneath it. This guide concentrates on that layer. Our meditation cushion guide covers raised seats, including round and crescent options.

A useful starting point

Choose the footprint first, then compare filling, cover care and storage. A mat needs room for your usual sitting arrangement; an advertised thickness alone will not tell you how it feels once you sit on it.

How we compared the options

We checked five Amazon UK listings, their product descriptions and available customer feedback, including less favourable comments, on 24 October 2026. Each listing showed at least 4.5 out of 5 stars. Manufacturer information helped clarify materials and care where available.

This is a researched comparison; we have not tested these mats ourselves. Reviews describe individual experiences and can cover different colours or versions. The Mindful & Modern feedback retrieved was international; we identify that distinction in its profile.

01 · Check the footprint

Allow space for your seat and legs, as well as the mat itself.

02 · Think beyond thickness

Soft filling can compress. Listed loft is not a measurement of support under your body.

03 · Read the care label

A washable outer cover does not mean the filled mat can go in a washing machine.

Rectangular home setup

basaho Zabuton

  • 90 × 70 × 5cm
  • 2.6kg
  • Recycled-fibre filling

The Zen Black version combines recycled-fibre padding with a removable organic cotton cover that can be machine washed. Its rectangular footprint gives you a defined area beneath a separate seat.

Customer feedback: UK buyers praise the material, construction and cushioning. One reviewer who liked it on a wooden floor found it thick to roll and considered it better suited to a fixed location.

Before you choose: measure your storage space as well as your sitting area. This is a substantial floor layer rather than a compact travel mat.

Cotton-padded option

Lotuscrafts Zabuton Standard

  • Bordeaux red
  • Cotton padding
  • Removable cotton cover

This is the Standard Bordeaux listing, model ZB75BO. Its layered cotton padding is intended to sit beneath a separate meditation cushion. It should be compared as its own version rather than borrowing specifications from a current Deluxe or Comfort mat.

Customer feedback: a UK buyer liked pairing it with a Lotuscrafts cushion. Less favourable UK reviews describe thin padding or an inner that did not fill the cover fully.

Before you choose: size, weight and washing information differ between older listing fields and current maker pages. Confirm the exact dimensions and follow the supplied care label.

Square with a soft velvet cover
Florensi square meditation mat with purple velvet cover and gold embroidery

Product photograph: Florensi via Amazon.co.uk.

Florensi Meditation Mat

  • Approx. 81 × 81cm
  • Cotton insert
  • Removable velvet cover

The Purple Mat version has a square footprint, cotton filling and a soft velvet cover. The listing describes the outer cover as machine washable.

Customer feedback: UK reviews praise the colour, feel and quality. One UK buyer wanted more filling; a Canadian reviewer disputed the advertised loft. These differing experiences are useful if you prefer a dense pad.

Before you choose: the advertised three-inch height describes loft, not a guaranteed thickness under your weight. Soft filling can compress, so judge the construction alongside the headline measurement.

Roll-up storage with ties

Product photograph: Leewadee via Amazon.co.uk.

Leewadee Kapok Zabuton

  • 70 × 70 × 4cm
  • 1.5kg
  • Kapok filling

The selected Sf17 Green mat has a polyester cover and natural kapok filling. Its ribbed construction rolls up and secures with integrated ties, giving it a different storage format from a broad loose pad.

Customer feedback: UK buyers praise the pattern and roll-up convenience, including use beneath a meditation stool. One Canadian reviewer found the folds noticeable during longer sittings.

Before you choose: the cover is polyester, not cotton. Follow the maker’s spot-cleaning and drying advice rather than assuming the filled mat can be machine washed.

Generous rectangular footprint
Mindful and Modern rectangular cotton-filled zabuton in Minimal Black

Product photograph: Mindful & Modern via Amazon.co.uk.

Mindful & Modern Zabuton

  • Approx. 91.4 × 71.1cm
  • Cotton cover
  • Cotton filling

The Minimal Black model offers a large rectangular sitting area with a removable cotton outer cover. Compare its footprint with the space your usual seat and legs occupy.

Customer feedback: the retrieved reviews were international, with no UK review text available in our research. US buyers praise the construction and generous area, including one who used it with a bench.

Before you choose: the listing’s care table says hand wash, while its copy describes a machine-washable cover. Follow the supplied label and keep the filled inner out of a wash unless expressly permitted.

Choose with confidence

Buying and everyday care

Measure your sitting arrangement

Put your usual cushion or bench where you intend to practise, then note where your knees and feet rest. Compare that area with the mat’s dimensions. A larger mat takes up more floor and storage space, so the biggest option is not automatically the most useful.

Compare the feel, not just the height

Cotton, recycled fibres and kapok describe fillings, but do not tell you everything about firmness. Amount of filling, stitching and how the pad compresses also matter. Reviews can identify preferences and recurring concerns; they cannot establish what will feel comfortable for your body.

Check what can be cleaned

Read care instructions for the selected version, especially when a retailer’s table and description conflict. Remove a washable cover before cleaning it. Do not treat a filled mat as machine washable simply because the cover is removable, and let any cleaned component dry fully before reassembling.

Plan where it will live

A dedicated corner may accommodate a mat left flat. If you pack everything away after each session, compare the permitted folding or rolling method and the available storage space. Check the organiser’s equipment list before carrying a bulky mat to a silent retreat in the UK.

Meditation mat questions

Is a zabuton the same as a zafu cushion?

A zabuton is the broad floor pad; a zafu is the raised seat often placed above it. They can be used together, but a mat listing does not necessarily include a cushion. Check the contents rather than relying on a lifestyle photograph.

Can I start with a folded blanket?

A folded blanket may be enough to try a softer floor layer using something you own. It can shift or compress differently from a purpose-made mat. Our yoga blanket guide explains another useful option.

Which meditation mat should I compare first?

Choose according to your available space, preferred surface and care needs. Compare the rectangular options for a dedicated area, the Florensi for a square velvet-covered pad, and the Leewadee if roll-up storage matters. Leave room for personal preference rather than choosing on ratings alone.
