A good bolster gives you a raised surface to rest on during supported yoga positions. The useful question is which shape, height and filling suit your practice.

You might prefer adjustable buckwheat for a substantial prop at home, a lighter filling for carrying to class, or the broad surface of a rectangular bolster. Comfort is personal, so start with the dimensions of a bolster you already enjoy using.

Where to start

Compare basaho, Yoga-Mad and Yoga Studio for adjustable round buckwheat support; Yogamatters for a lighter round alternative; and Lotuscrafts or NGT for a rectangular shape.

How we chose the shortlist

Each selected Amazon UK listing showed at least 4.5 out of 5 stars and more than 150 ratings on 24 October 2026. We compared the stated materials, shape, cover care and practical features, read available customer feedback including less favourable comments, and checked manufacturer information.

This is a researched comparison; we have not tested these bolsters ourselves. Customer experiences are identified below. An average rating cannot tell you which height or firmness will feel comfortable for you.

01 · Shape and height

Compare actual measurements rather than labels such as “large” or “standard”.

02 · Filling and weight

Decide whether you want adjustable husks, lighter fibres or fixed foam.

03 · Cover care

A removable cover is useful, but it is not always machine washable.

Firm, adjustable support
basaho round buckwheat yoga bolster in Zen Black

Product photograph: basaho.

basaho Yoga Bolster

  • 68 × 20 × 20cm
  • 4kg
  • Adjustable buckwheat
  • Organic cotton cover

A substantial round bolster with a zipped inner for adjusting the filling, a removable machine-washable cover and a handle in the middle.

Customer feedback: buyers praise the fabric, stitching and firm support. One reviewer found it rather hard and said the cover picked up fluff from carpet.

Before you choose: the 4kg weight is noticeable in a class bag. Adjusting the filling may help you find the firmness you prefer.

A lighter round option
Yogamatters Organic Cotton Bolster in grey with recycled fibre filling

Product photograph: Yogamatters.

Yogamatters Organic Cotton Bolster

  • Round profile
  • Recycled Recron fibre
  • Organic cotton cover
  • Carry handle

This model uses recycled Recron fibre instead of buckwheat. The removable organic cotton cover is machine washable at 30°C, making cover care straightforward.

Customer feedback: reviews praise its construction, although one buyer would have preferred a heavier bolster for restorative sessions.

Before you choose: Yogamatters also makes buckwheat-filled models. Check the product name; size and weight descriptions vary between listings, so confirm the selected version if measurements matter.

Lighter rectangular support
Lotuscrafts Restorative L rectangular yoga bolster in anthracite

Product photograph: Lotuscrafts.

Lotuscrafts Restorative L

  • Rectangular profile
  • Kapok filling
  • Approx. 1.6kg
  • Organic cotton cover

The rectangular shape offers a broad resting surface. Its stated weight of around 1.6kg is lighter than the buckwheat options, useful when moving props between rooms or classes.

Customer feedback: buyers praise the manageable weight and cover. One detailed review described needing to reshape the filling after prolonged use in one position.

Before you choose: size descriptions differ across this older Amazon listing and its variants; confirm precise dimensions with the seller. Lotuscrafts specifies a 30°C cover wash and no tumble drying.

A rectangular foam alternative

Product photograph: NGT via Amazon.co.uk.

NGT Yoga Bolster Pillow

  • Rectangular profile
  • Layered high-density foam
  • Removable cover
  • Carry handle

A fixed foam alternative to loose filling. The listing says the removable cover can be hand or machine washed; follow the care label supplied.

Customer feedback: some buyers like the supportive firmness; a UK reviewer found it too firm. Another mentioned its bulk in storage. Foam does not automatically mean soft.

Before you choose: there is less scope to change the height than with adjustable filling. The listing contains both 63cm and 65cm lengths, so check the selected size.

A shorter round option
Yoga-Mad round buckwheat yoga bolster in purple

Product photograph: Yoga-Mad via Amazon.co.uk.

Yoga-Mad Buckwheat Bolster

  • 61 × 23cm diameter
  • 4.3kg plain version
  • Adjustable buckwheat
  • Cotton cover

Shorter than the 68cm basaho, with a wider diameter. Adjustable filling and a carry handle make it a useful round option for home practice or classes.

Customer feedback: buyers praise the substantial support and removable cover. One found it smaller than expected, making a measurement check worthwhile.

Before you choose: this is still a heavy prop. Yoga-Mad specifies cold hand washing and line drying for the outer cover, rather than machine washing.

Fuller round support
Yoga Studio EU cylindrical organic buckwheat bolster in black

Product photograph: Yoga Studio via Amazon.co.uk.

Yoga Studio EU Buckwheat Bolster

  • Approx. 62 × 24cm
  • Organic buckwheat hulls
  • Adjustable filling
  • Washable cotton cover

The linked black bolster has a fuller cylindrical profile. Zipped inner and outer covers allow filling adjustment, with a carry handle and removable machine-washable cotton cover.

Customer feedback: buyers praise the construction and supportive feel. Some value its firmness, while another found it hard under the back.

Before you choose: a taller prop is not automatically more comfortable. Manufacturer and retailer weights differ; confirm the current specification if you will carry it regularly.

Choose with confidence

Shape, filling and everyday care

Start with shape and height

A rectangular bolster offers a broad surface and a choice of orientations. A round bolster gives a curved resting surface with a consistent diameter. Neither shape suits every person or position.

Note the dimensions of a class bolster you find comfortable, and measure your storage space. Height can matter more than a “large” or “standard” label.

Choose the feel you prefer

The buckwheat models here allow you to remove or add filling to adjust shape and firmness. Kapok and fibre provide lighter alternatives; foam has a more fixed construction. Customer comments show that every filling can feel firm to some users.

Read the care instructions

The basaho, Yogamatters and Yoga Studio covers have machine-washing instructions, while Yoga-Mad specifies hand washing for the model above. Remove the outer cover and follow the current care label. Do not wash the filled inner unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Taking a bolster on retreat?

A handle helps you lift a bolster, but a 4kg prop still takes up luggage weight and space. If you are heading to a yoga retreat in the UK, ask which props are provided before packing your own.

Before you choose

Yoga bolster questions

What is a yoga bolster used for?

A bolster provides a raised surface to rest on during supported yoga positions, beneath the knees, torso or another supported area. A teacher can help you choose an appropriate placement and height. Settle comfortably without forcing your body to fit the prop.

Can I use a normal pillow instead?

A firm pillow or folded blanket can be useful for trying a supported position at home. It may compress or move more than a purpose-made bolster. If you practise regularly, a bolster offers a more consistent shape. Our yoga blanket guide covers another useful prop.

Is a bolster the same as a meditation cushion?

They can overlap in use, but a long bolster supports larger areas of the body, while many meditation cushions provide a smaller seat. If seated meditation is your main aim, compare our meditation cushion guide before choosing.

Which bolster should I compare first?

Start with basaho, Yoga-Mad and Yoga Studio for adjustable, firm round support. Compare Yogamatters for a lighter round prop, or Lotuscrafts and NGT for rectangular options with different fillings. Choose according to your preferred shape, height, weight and cover care.
