India · Yoga holidays & residential programmes
Choosing a yoga retreat in India starts with the day you want to have: a full ashram timetable, two classes around time at the beach, or private practice within a comfortable wellness stay.

The differences are substantial. A seven-day residential course near Rishikesh might involve early meditation, silence and communal duties. A flexible Goa holiday may leave most of the afternoon free. At a luxury retreat, your yoga sessions can share the schedule with consultations and treatments, so the number of hours on the mat deserves attention.
This guide compares fifteen centres across Uttarakhand, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The selection covers dedicated residential yoga programmes and wellbeing stays with a defined yoga component. It is organised by region and programme fit, with practical details from the centres’ own published information. It is a researched planning guide; the descriptions do not imply a personal stay.
How to choose a yoga retreat in India
Choose the programme before the room. Ask for a sample day showing which sessions are included, which are compulsory and which cost extra. “Daily yoga” can mean a single group class, two substantial practices, or a personalised appointment on selected days. Those arrangements suit different reasons for travelling.
For a first retreat, also establish how beginners are taught. A dedicated beginner group, a teaching cycle starting on a particular date and an advanced Ashtanga intensive are different commitments. A course welcoming beginners can still have early starts and a full timetable. Ask about modifications, teacher availability and the balance of postures, breathing, meditation and discussion.
Budget, mid-range or luxury?
These are broad editorial categories for comparing accommodation, personal instruction and package style within this guide. They are not quoted prices or quality scores. Dates, room sharing, taxes, transfers and programme inclusions can change the total considerably.
For a useful comparison, request a total for the same dates, occupancy and number of nights. Include meals, all scheduled classes, private sessions, taxes, airport transfers and any compulsory supplements. Parmarth’s retreat fee needs a specific quotation, so its simple ashram setting should not be treated as a verified low package price.

Rishikesh and Uttarakhand: four contrasting programmes
These northern choices range from a private wellness programme above Rishikesh to residential ashram life further into the mountains. Confirm the exact arrival point and operating dates.
Ananda in the Himalayas, Narendra Nagar
Budget category: Luxury. Stay: Published yoga programmes of 7, 14 or 21 nights.
Ananda suits a first visit built around private accommodation and individually arranged practice. Its Holistic Yoga programme combines classical yoga, breathing and meditation, alongside consultations and access to scheduled group activities. Check the proposed balance of personal yoga and other wellness appointments when requesting your quotation.
The 45-square-metre guest rooms have a private balcony or porch and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub. Three wellness meals daily are listed with the programme. Garden and valley-view categories give you a choice of outlook; confirm the exact room and access arrangements if stairs or walking distances matter.
The retreat sits above Rishikesh, approximately 35 kilometres from Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport. Transfers can be arranged; ask whether they are included. Private rooms and an individually arranged schedule put it in the luxury bracket; the final package is priced by quotation.

Phool Chatti Yoga Ashram, Rishikesh
Budget category: Mid-range. Stay: Seven days, spanning six nights.
Phool Chatti offers a defined yoga and meditation retreat for beginners and intermediate participants. Hatha and modified Ashtanga practice sit alongside breathing exercises, discussion, nature walks, devotional activities and karma yoga. The day begins early, and silence during mornings, meals and after evening meditation is part of the experience.
Single and double rooms have attached private bathrooms with hot water and a balcony or terrace; some have air-conditioning. Three vegetarian meals are served daily, with vegan and gluten-free options listed. Confirm dietary requirements directly, since dairy is used.
Request the current residential package for your room category, including its booking fee. Mats, cushions and bedding are supplied; bring a towel. Confirm your departure’s year and availability before booking. It offers newcomers an ashram routine with the reassurance of a private bathroom, provided the silence and devotional elements appeal.
Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh
Budget category: Simple ashram; retreat price on enquiry. Stay: Full attendance at your selected retreat.
Choose Parmarth for a programme rooted in Hindu spiritual life on the Ganges. The School of Yoga’s residential retreats combine postures, pranayama, meditation, chanting and karma yoga, with Ganga Aarti and satsang woven into the experience. They are offered separately from teacher training and ordinary ashram accommodation.
The English-language New Year retreat, 29 December 2026–3 January 2027, requires participation in the complete programme and every session. White clothing for yoga and modest dress are requested. This suits travellers who welcome an organised devotional schedule and community participation.
Before paying, obtain written confirmation of the retreat fee, room occupancy, attached or shared bathroom, and which vegetarian meals are included. A general room reservation does not enrol you in the retreat. Also confirm the arrival route and luggage arrangements in Swarg Ashram. Simple ashram accommodation does not establish the total programme cost; compare the complete written quote.

Sivananda Kutir, near Uttarkashi
Budget category: Budget. Stay: At least seven nights; usual season 16 April–14 October.
In Netala near Uttarkashi, Sivananda Kutir’s residential Yoga Vacation offers a disciplined ashram rhythm. Two daily yoga classes, meditation, chanting, philosophy, morning and evening satsang, and karma yoga fill the timetable. Two vegetarian meals are served daily. Beginners are encouraged to arrive for a teaching cycle starting on the first or sixteenth of the month.
Accommodation is simple: separate male and female dormitories have shared hot-water bathrooms, while twin rooms have attached hot-water bathrooms. Dormitory and twin-share categories make this a budget option; confirm the applicable international rate, room category and final inclusions.
This is a useful choice for travellers comfortable with communal life and early starts. Ask about mountain-road transfers and room access. Confirm the next operating season directly, since the normal Yoga Vacation season does not include winter.
Yoga retreats in Goa: beach holidays and focused courses
Choose the town as carefully as the teacher. Mandrem and Polem offer the beach settings below; Assagao’s programmes are inland and have their own teaching styles.
Ashiyana Goa, Mandrem
Budget: Mid-range, with luxury room options. Ashiyana suits a first yoga holiday in India if you want a daily practice routine alongside independent beach time. Its Mandrem village setting is a two-minute walk from the beach. The residential Yoga Holiday includes two daily yoga classes, evening activities, accommodation, brunch and dinner. Choose this flexible format if you prefer arranging your own days around classes; separately hosted retreats have their own teachers and schedules.
The bedroom choices range from wooden lodges and garden rooms to suites, with en-suite bathrooms. Cooling varies by category: Riverview Down has fans, while Riverview Up adds air conditioning. Check stairs and room access if these affect your stay.
Morning classes are usually scheduled from 8–10am, with another session from 4–6pm. Confirm the minimum stay, current timetable and chosen room before booking. Ashiyana’s published Goa season runs from 1 October to 15 May; October can involve set-up work and reduced activities.
Bamboo Yoga Retreat, Polem
Budget: Mid-range. At the southern end of Polem Beach in South Goa, Bamboo combines beach huts and cabanas with substantial daily practice. Its flexible yoga holidays include morning meditation, a yoga class lasting around 90 minutes to two hours, and a 90-minute sunset session. Styles vary with the resident teachers and can include Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga and Yin. Beginners and experienced practitioners are welcomed; ask which classes will run during your dates.
The included food is morning fruit, juice and tea, followed by vegetarian brunch and buffet dinner. Huts and cabanas have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and fans. Cabanas have open-roof bathrooms and balconies; beachfront and set-back options offer different outlooks. Wi-Fi is available in the lounge, and you should bring a beach towel.
This suits travellers who want yoga and sea views with private accommodation. Confirm the minimum stay and seasonal opening dates, and arrange transport for the current Polem address. Local festivals and neighbouring activity can bring noise, so expect a beach setting rather than guaranteed silence.
Purple Valley Yoga, Assagao
Budget: Mid-range. Purple Valley is a focused choice for studying Ashtanga Vinyasa with a named teacher and a continuing group. It is inland in Assagao, North Goa, with gardens and a swimming pool; beaches require a taxi ride. The retreat calendar includes two-week programmes and longer intensives, with one-week options on selected courses. Check each teacher’s experience requirements before choosing a departure.
For example, the David Robson and Jelena Vesić retreat, scheduled for 27 February–13 March 2027, welcomes beginners and experienced students. Its programme includes morning pranayama, mindfulness, Mysore-style practice and afternoon workshops. Vegetarian meals are served twice daily.
Bedrooms have attached bathrooms, fans and mosquito nets, with private and shared arrangements. Solo guests can request a same-sex roommate. Garden cottages are for two people; other accommodation includes upstairs rooms and a house spread across four levels. Confirm your room location and transfer arrangements. This suits travellers who want to concentrate on one yoga method throughout their stay.
SWAN Yoga Retreat, Assagao
Budget: Mid-range. SWAN offers an ashram-style routine in inland Assagao, North Goa, with early starts, communal meals and an emphasis on yogic philosophy. Its one-week Yoga Meditation holiday accepts arrivals on any day, although Friday is recommended because it is the weekly day off. Confirm the number of nights included in your booking.
A sample day begins with 6am meditation, followed by morning asana, brunch, philosophy or Yoga Nidra, afternoon practice and dinner. Classical Hatha yoga sits alongside pranayama, mantra and selected evening rituals. The residential package includes morning fruit and herbal tea plus vegetarian buffet brunch and dinner. Budget Cottages have private bathrooms; higher categories offer additional space or amenities. Sharing rates assume two people travelling together.
The campus spreads over six tiers, so discuss steps and gradients before reserving. Bring a yoga mat: the venue does not loan them. SWAN operates from October to May and suits guests comfortable with a structured, communal stay.
Nalanda Retreat, Mandrem
Budget: Mid-range, with premium rooms. Nalanda suits travellers looking for a beach setting, room choice and a yoga programme matched to their experience. Its Yoga Holiday offers five- or seven-night beginner stays, fourteen nights for intermediate practice and twenty-one nights for advanced students. Morning and evening yoga sit alongside meditation, pranayama, philosophy and home-practice guidance. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are listed for this programme.
Accommodation includes hillside rooms and beachside heritage rooms or suites. Beachside Heritage bedrooms specifically include private en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, fans and Wi-Fi, approximately 50–100 metres from the beach. Check the amenities of your chosen category, since these differ across the property.
For the in-house holiday, you can request a preferred arrival date; the team confirms the schedule. The separate guest-teacher retreats have fixed dates and their own meal plans. Ensure you book the full programme: an ordinary room stay includes breakfast and morning yoga. Ask about airport transfers and their current cost.
Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra: six residential options
Compare these programmes by duration and teaching format. They span simple ashram accommodation, a beginner immersion and private wellness stays with a defined yoga component.
Sivananda Dhanwantari Ashram, Neyyar Dam, Kerala
Budget category: Budget. Choose this residential ashram if you want a clear routine and are comfortable joining chanting, meditation and shared daily duties alongside physical practice. Its Yoga Vacation has a three-night minimum, with teaching cycles beginning on the first and sixteenth of each month. Beginners are encouraged to join at the start and allow two weeks.
The day begins with a 5:20am wake-up and includes two asana classes, morning and evening satsang, a lecture and karma yoga. Two vegetarian meals and afternoon tea are included. Coffee, alcohol, tobacco, meat, fish and eggs are outside the ashram’s rules, so check that the whole daily routine suits you.
Simple accommodation underpins the budget category. Options include non-air-conditioned singles with shared bathrooms and air-conditioned twin rooms with private hot-water bathrooms. Confirm your category before booking. Thiruvananthapuram airport is approximately 33km away. From 16 October 2026, published check-in hours are 8am–7:30pm; 22–31 December follows a separate Christmas programme.
Shreyas Retreat, near Bengaluru, Karnataka
Budget category: Luxury. Shreyas suits travellers who want structured yoga, private instruction and comfortable accommodation within the same stay. Its dedicated Yoga Retreat packages run for three, five, seven, fourteen or twenty-one nights. Teaching draws on Hatha and Ashtanga Vinyasa, making the conversation about your experience and preferred pace worth having before arrival.
The three-night package lists two private yoga sessions per room, a private breathing and meditation session, cleansing practices and a massage per person. Vegetarian breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of the standard residential offering, alongside scheduled group yoga and meditation. Check the final timetable and inclusions when comparing a package with a standard nightly booking.
Garden Tented Cottages have air conditioning, king or twin beds, private courtyards and open-air showers. Light sleepers should discuss the more enclosed Poolside Cottages. Private accommodation and personalised sessions place Shreyas in the luxury bracket. Airport transfers appear in packages of five nights and longer; confirm the cost for a shorter visit.
SwaSwara, Gokarna, Karnataka
Budget category: Luxury. SwaSwara is a good fit if you want yoga and meditation alongside space to read, enjoy the coastal setting and join a broader wellbeing programme. Its Swa Wellbeing stay starts at three nights and combines scheduled practice, consultations, therapies and meals. The yoga programme includes postures, breathing, yoga nidra and guided meditation; individual hour-long sessions are an additional, availability-dependent booking.
Private Konkan villas give this retreat its luxury character. Each has an internal courtyard, a partly open-to-sky bathroom and an upstairs yoga deck. Only the bedroom is enclosed and air-conditioned, so you should be happy with living areas that open to the surrounding environment. Ask about stairs if you expect to use the deck regularly.
Food includes vegetarian dishes and seafood; specify your dietary requirements. The published package lists transfers from Goa’s Dabolim or Mopa airport. Obtain a current written quote confirming your programme, transfer and total, as the online tariff has inconsistent validity headings.
Kaivalyadhama, Lonavala, Maharashtra
Budget category: Budget, with upgraded rooms available. Kaivalyadhama suits visitors who want a week of regular practice in a residential yoga institute. The Yoga and Relaxation programme combines asana, breathing, meditation and evening talks. Residential bookings have a one-week minimum and run from Sunday to Sunday, so organise your flights around that arrival pattern.
The included meals are vegetarian and sattvic, with mild seasoning and no onion or garlic. Standard non-air-conditioned rooms come with either shared or attached bathrooms; specify which you want. Executive, Deluxe and cottage categories offer further choices. Simple accommodation and inclusive weekly arrangements support the budget classification, although the room selected changes the total.
Practical details matter here: yoga mats are supplied, towels are not, and there is no in-room Wi-Fi. Some Deluxe rooms are closer to highway noise and about five minutes’ walk from teaching and dining. The programme is designed for independent guests, with no transport around campus. Confirm your walking requirements, room location and Sunday orientation arrangements.

Atmantan Wellness Centre, Mulshi, Maharashtra
Budget category: Luxury. Atmantan suits travellers who want a personalised yoga stay within a larger wellness centre near Pune. Its Journey Through Yoga programme welcomes beginners and requires at least five nights. The advertised five-night example includes two personal yoga sessions, one private breathing and meditation session, group activities, consultations and selected therapies. Final activities are tailored following assessment, so ask for your actual schedule before committing.
Accommodation ranges from garden and balcony rooms to suites and villas. Asoka and Arjuna rooms offer king or twin beds, air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms with showers and bathtubs. Garden rooms involve a short flight of steps; balcony rooms are recommended by the provider for guests seeking fewer stairs. Meals are vegetarian and planned within the centre’s consultation process.
Private accommodation, individual sessions and the wider facilities support the luxury category. Request a complete programme quote and discuss the pre-arrival questionnaire. Allow approximately 90 minutes by road from Pune airport, or three-and-a-half hours from Mumbai, subject to traffic.
AyurYoga Eco-Ashram, Mysore district, Karnataka
Budget category: Budget to mid-range, depending on your room. Set beside the River Kabini outside Mysore, AyurYoga suits beginners who can give a substantial part of their trip to a learning programme. Its fourteen-day beginner retreat combines two daily yoga sessions, guided meditation and theory, with practice on six days each week. Attendance can normally be shortened to ten days, but the full programme charge still applies.
Expect a 6am start and a vegetarian meal pattern of brunch, fruit or snacks at lunchtime, and dinner. A cotton yoga mat, books and a neti pot are listed among the inclusions. Beginner practice is taught separately, although smaller groups may share some meditation and theory sessions with other participants.
Accommodation includes private eco-cottages with attached Western bathrooms and showers, twin-share Deluxe rooms and newer Premium rooms. Compare the exact room and dates when requesting a quote: published programme and booking-form prices differ. Bengaluru airport transfers are extra, with the road journey typically taking four to five hours.
When to go: match the region and programme
There is no single best season for every yoga retreat in India. Goa Tourism describes October to March as its most agreeable visitor period, with the southwest monsoon generally running from June to September. Several centres operate seasonal calendars, so check opening dates as well as the climate. Ashiyana, for example, cautions that October can involve set-up work and reduced activities.
Kerala has a different rainfall pattern. Kerala Tourism describes December to February as generally pleasant, with southwest rains prominent in June and July and a second rainy period in October and November. Coastal humidity, inland conditions and highland temperatures also differ; a general seasonal description is not a forecast for your stay.
For Uttarakhand, the exact location matters. Dehradun district’s climate guidance records most rainfall from June to September and cooler conditions at higher elevations. Sivananda Kutir has a normal April-to-October season, so a winter beach holiday and a mountain ashram visit cannot be planned around the same assumptions. Ask the provider about operating dates, road transfers and likely clothing needs.
A fixed teacher-led retreat may determine your dates more strongly than the weather. Confirm the departure year, teacher, ability level and full attendance requirement before booking flights. Published dates establish a scheduled programme, rather than available places.
Travel, entry requirements and booking details
Plan the final road journey alongside the international flight. Goa has Dabolim and Mopa airports; ask your retreat to specify which airport its transfer quote covers. For a northern stay, an arrival in Delhi is not the end of the journey to Rishikesh or Uttarkashi. At AyurYoga, the provider describes a four-to-five-hour road transfer from Bengaluru airport. Leave enough time to arrive within reception hours without missing the first session.
For travellers using a full British-citizen passport, current FCDO entry guidance specifies at least six months’ validity after arrival and two blank pages. A visa is normally required unless you hold a valid OCI card. Foreign visitors must complete the separate online e-arrival card before reaching immigration; it can be submitted within 72 hours before arrival. Other passport holders should check the rules applying to them.
Use the official Indian visa portal to check your eligibility and programme category. Short-term yoga appears among permitted purposes, with conditions; a formal qualification or teacher-training course needs particular attention. Ask the Indian authorities if your exact course does not clearly fit the published requirements. Check the latest rules before applying and travelling.
Before paying a deposit, obtain written confirmation of the programme, number of nights, teacher or teaching format, room occupancy, bathroom, cooling, meals and transfer arrangements. Clarify cancellation, date changes and payment charges. A room reservation should explicitly include the yoga programme you intend to attend.
If access matters, describe your needs concretely: how far you can walk, whether you can manage steps, and whether you need a step-free route between the bedroom, dining room and practice space. An en-suite bathroom or a luxury label does not establish step-free access. SWAN’s tiers, Shreyas’s open-air showers and Kaivalyadhama’s campus distances are details to discuss before choosing a room.
Read the current FCDO advice for your route and region, arrange suitable insurance, and review TravelHealthPro’s India guidance for your itinerary. The FCDO recommends checking vaccine advice at least eight weeks before travel. Discuss any health needs or limits on practice with an appropriate professional and your host before committing.
What to pack for an Indian yoga retreat
Ask what the centre provides before carrying equipment from the UK. Phool Chatti supplies mats and cushions, Kaivalyadhama supplies mats, and SWAN asks you to bring your own. Towels, laundry and bedding also vary. Our yoga retreat packing guide can help you build a list around your particular booking.
Pack clothing for both practice and the setting. Phool Chatti’s published guidance asks guests to cover shoulders and knees, bring white clothes for ceremonies and include warm clothing for November to February. These are that ashram’s requirements, rather than a universal rule for all fifteen centres. Ask about laundry if you will attend two classes daily.
Questions to settle before your first retreat
Which retreats suit complete beginners?
Phool Chatti explicitly welcomes beginners alongside intermediate participants, and AyurYoga has a dedicated beginner immersion. Nalanda lists shorter beginner holidays, while the Sivananda centres recommend arriving at the start of a teaching cycle. Purple Valley’s suitability depends on the named course: check the teacher’s requirements instead of assuming every Ashtanga intensive has the same entry level. Choose based on the teaching arrangements and timetable you can sustain.
Is an ashram stay the same as a yoga holiday?
An ashram stay can involve chanting, devotional ceremonies, communal service, silence, dress rules and attendance requirements. A flexible yoga holiday may offer more independent time, although its own rules still apply. Read the actual daily schedule and decide whether the spiritual and communal parts appeal as much as the physical practice.
How long should you allow?
Start with the programme’s minimum, then add the travel time it needs. Shreyas and SwaSwara offer three-night programmes, Atmantan’s yoga stay requires five nights, Kutir requires seven, and AyurYoga’s beginner immersion is fourteen days. A shorter stay may provide a useful introduction, but it will not contain the same teaching progression as a complete longer course.
Should you book yoga, Ayurveda or teacher training?
Ask which activity structures the day. An Ayurveda-led stay can prioritise consultations and treatments, with yoga as one component. Teacher training involves a course commitment and may have qualification-related entry and visa requirements. For a general yoga holiday, book a programme whose actual timetable gives the amount and style of practice you want, with accommodation and meals that suit the rest of your trip.
