Description of the Retreat

Shallowford House is a stunning 19th century building, and in 1938 was given by the Webster family to the Diocese of Lichfield to be used as a training and retreat centre. Set in beautiful countryside, in the middle of the diocese, it’s accessible as a central meeting point. Our aim is to provide an excellent Christian venue for day or residential conferences, training events, retreats, meetings or social gatherings. The house and grounds offer you space to meet with God, which together with a strong focus on hospitality and warmth of welcome, we hope enables you to feel at home.

A place of prayer, peace and purpose
The house and grounds offer you space to meet with God, which together with a strong focus on hospitality and warmth of welcome, we hope enables you to feel at home.

We think that our house and gardens are stunning, but we want our facilities to be secondary to why you come. Whether you need a stopping off point on your journey to rest, be resourced, or to meet with others, it’s important to us that you feel able to draw near to God in whatever the purpose of your visit.

The house can accommodate residential groups of up to 38 and day conferences of up to 60 people. Accommodation is in single, twin or double ensuite bedrooms.

The house is set within five acres of secluded gardens, woodland and meadow in the rolling Staffordshire countryside. Located just 3 miles from the M6 (Junction 14), Shallowford is easily accessible from all parts of the country.

Simon Hudson, director and his wife Alison have been at Shallowford House since August 2010. They offer a warm and hospitable welcome to all those who visit the house.

We offer an Open Programme, as well as welcoming in groups following their own programme, either for the day or residentially. Our Open Programme includes Led Retreats or Individually Guided Retreats, running at various times through the year. Please see our Events page for further information and dates. These provide an excellent opportunity to take time out and draw closer to God. Email us to discuss your requirements. We are able to offer one-to-one time by prior arrangement only.

Teacher/Teachings

Chapel
The Chapel is the spiritual heart of Shallowford House. Its uncluttered design gives it a very special sense of beauty and tranquility. There is seating for up to 60, but it is as well suited for very small groups. The Chapel is available for all our guests and is suitable for all denominations. There is a clavinova for guests to use.

Our vestry is well stocked with vestments, candles, communion elements and glassware and a good selection of bibles and hymn books. There is a CD player and CDs and an ipod dock.

A small prayer room off the Chapel is equipped for private use and is available at any time.

Led Retreats
Our Open House Programme includes led retreats and Quiet Days during the year. This is an excellent opportunity to take time out and draw closer to God.
Please see our events page for further information and dates.

Individual Retreats
For those seeking a private retreat, with or without one-to-one time with a retreat guide are most welcome at Shallowford House.
Please contact Simon or Alison on 01785 760233 or email us to check availability.

Facilities

Our five acres of beautifully maintained gardens, woodland and meadow are the ideal place to relax and unwind. There are different areas of the garden that add interest – a croquet lawn, formal lawns, a Friends garden, vegetable and fruit gardens and a wildlife area. In our meadow you will find a wild flower prayer labyrinth and a pond which we hope will soon have ducks on it.

We welcome visitors almost all year round to view the gardens, but do please call ahead if you are planning a visit, as we are occasionally closed to visitors.

Food

he food at Shallowford is renowned for being of a very high standard. We use local produce wherever possible, including some from our own garden. We serve Fairtrade tea and coffee and other produce where possible. We can cater for a very wide range of special dietary needs if notified in advance of your visit. Breakfast is continental, lunches are two-course, with a three-course evening meal.

In addition, we have a fully licensed bar - perfect for relaxing after a hard day's work!

Practical Information

What is an individual retreat
An individual retreat is a time when you can step aside from the busyness of life to be alone with God. There is no set programme, but a Retreat Guide can meet with you for up to an hour a day and their role is to listen to you and to God on your behalf and help you to make the most of your time.

Do I need to be a Christian/Anglican?
Retreats are available to anyone seeking time alone with God, wherever you are on your spiritual journey.

How do I use the silence?
On a retreat you will be encouraged to be still and spend time in God’s presence. Being in silence can bring things to the surface for you to deal with and your Retreat Guide is there to help you discern where God is in that.

What can I expect?
To be made welcome and comfortable, you will be well fed and space will be given to you to be alone with God. You will have use of all that Shallowford House offers to its guests. Many people find that taking time out on a retreat becomes a significant milestone in their Christian life.

How will I spend my time?
You might reflect on a passage of scripture, spend some time walking around the gardens, or maybe use some of our art materials in response to what you have seen or heard. It’s ok to sleep too – sometimes we just need to rest in God’s presence.

What do I talk about with my retreat guide?
Whatever God has laid on your heart. You may be looking to deepen your relationship with God, or be facing a crossroads in life or in your Christian ministry, or have some searching questions to ask. Your Retreat Guide is not a Counsellor, but someone who listens to and with you.
