Description of the Retreat

The mission of Dhanakosa is to support the practice of the Buddha’s teachings by providing retreats that encompass both traditional and contemporary approaches to Buddhist practice.

Dhanakosa Buddhist Retreat Center works under the auspices of the Triratna Buddhist Order.

History of Dhanakosa

Originally a hotel, Dhanakosa (then known as Ledcreich) was acquired by the Glasgow Buddhist centre by lease hold in 1992. We began holding retreats in September of that same year. In 2002, the Dhanakosa Trust was founded and was able to buy the property with the support of a loan from Triodos Bank.

We are a registered Scottish charity (no. SCO32776) and the day-to-day running of the centre is undertaken by a resident team overseen by a board of trustees.

Since its first retreat in 1992, Dhanakosa has adhered to a payment by donation financial model (see dana economy for more information). We continue to be secure and able to invest in the continued improvement of our facilities and teaching, for all to enjoy, for many years to come.

Dhanakosa Buddhist Retreat Centre offers a wide range of retreats including yoga, hillwalking, Tai Chi, arts and alternative health, all complementing a programme of introductory meditation teaching. Additionally, there are meditation and Buddhist study retreats designed for those with a more regular practice.

Dhanakosa is beautifully situated in the southern part of the Scottish highlands in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and this setting provides ideal conditions for retreats.

Teacher/Teachings

The Triratna Buddhist Community (Triratna) was founded in 1967, by Sangharakshita, an Englishman who had spent many years in India as an ordained Buddhist monk and returned to the UK in the mid 60’s. Triratna is an international fellowship of those who aspire to the Buddhist path of mindfulness, and positive emotion, under the leadership of the Triratna Buddhist Order.

Centres in this worldwide movement exist on all the major continents. Dhanakosa is one of many retreat centres in this network. For more information about centres in your area, see find a triratna centre.

In keeping with Buddhist traditions, the Triratna Buddhist Community also pays attention to contemporary ideas, particularly drawn from Western philosophy, psychotherapy, and art. The Triratna Buddhist Community and the Triratna Buddhist Order were originally known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, and the Western Buddhist Order. The name change occurred in 2009.

Timetable

Each morning begins with meditation, after which there is breakfast. In the mid-mornings there will usually be an activity related to the theme of the retreat, followed by lunch.

There will be a few hours of free time in the afternoon so that you can explore the beautiful countryside around the retreat centre.

In the evenings, after dinner, there are often talks from the retreat leaders on Buddhism and meditation, discussion groups, or activities related to the theme of the retreat. On week long retreats there will also be periods of silence introduced.

There will be a rota for work duties like washing up, and helping the cook, usually for half an hour or so each day. On week long retreats there will also be a work period of one and a half to two hours where we ask people to help the retreat centre team with jobs such as cleaning, gardening and general maintenance.
