What is Bufo Alvarius?
Bufo Alvarius, commonly known as the Colorado River Toad or Sonoran Desert Toad, is a species native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This remarkable amphibian has gained significant attention due to the psychoactive properties of its secretion, which contains 5-MeO-DMT (5-Methoxy-N, N-Dimethyltryptamine). Often referred to as the “God Molecule,” 5-MeO-DMT is a powerful psychedelic compound renowned for its ability to induce intense and transformative experiences. A Bufo ceremony should not be undertaken lightly, as the experience can be challenging and awe-inspiring. It is important to have a respected and well-known facilitator

My Personal Experience in a Bufo Ceremony
Bufo ceremonies are becoming an increasingly popular retreat experience, and with that popularity comes a diverse range of setups and experiences. Here’s my account of participating in a recent Bufo ceremony with Avalon Retreats, based in Barcelona. They offer Ayahuasca Retreats in Spain and Psilocybin & Bufo Retreats.
The ceremony commenced at 8 p.m. and continued until 1 a.m. in a beautiful yoga studio in Barcelona’s heart. Upon arrival, I got to know the other eight participants. One participant casually mentioned to me that she had spent the entire week in Barcelona preparing for the ceremony, which left me feeling somewhat doubtful about my level of preparation, as I had only flown in that day and had just returned from a colourful festival in Germany.
Once the formalities were completed, we were smudged with Palo Santo, a traditional cleansing ritual, before entering the ceremonial space. As we walked in, we were greeted with a long and friendly hug from the shaman, a kind-hearted lady from Spain named Ness. Ness has a wealth of experience in plant medicine, having studied extensively with South American tribes. She was assisted by two compassionate guardians, Pierluigi and Susy, who gracefully helped hold the space throughout the ceremony.

We began by introducing ourselves and sharing what had brought us to the ceremony—our intentions for taking Bufo, how we were feeling, and whether we had any prior experience with this powerful medicine. None of us had tried it before, and the group had a palpable sense of nervousness. I felt a tightening in my stomach and noticed my heart beating faster than usual. I had heard from multiple sources that taking Bufo could feel like a near-death or dying experience, requiring complete surrender and the willingness to let go of everything. Was I ready to do that? I wondered.

Rather than diving straight into the ceremony, we engaged in preliminary exercises designed to alleviate nervousness. We danced to some happy Bob Marley and Bobby McFerrin songs, lightening the mood. More importantly, it helped us get more into our bodies and out of our heads, making us more present for the experience to come. Following this, Ness talked about Bufo Alvarius, detailing her history and extensive experience with this powerful medicine.
This was followed by a demonstration of how to take the medicine and what to do afterwards. Since the effects of Bufo are felt very, very quickly, it is crucial to have everything prepared so you can lie down safely afterwards. To enhance the experience, we used blindfolds, providing a more immersive journey.
Following the talk and demonstration, we participated in a short Hapé ceremony. Hapé is a finely ground powder made from a blend of medicinal and sacred plants, most notably various types of tobacco. Although having this powder blown up your nose is not the most pleasant experience, it has an almost immediate grounding effect, and I felt much more connected to my body afterwards.

The main event of the evening then began. We were each given a glass pipe with the Bufo medicine inside, and Ness went around, in no particular order, heating the pipe while we sat at the end of our mats and inhaled the smoke or vapour. The medicine, a dried paste, is vaporised through a glass pipe. It is important to inhale slowly and deeply, holding it in for at least 10 seconds to ensure the full effect. There was a heightened sense of nervous anticipation as none of us knew when our turn would come. There were moments of fear, and I thought about backing away entirely from the experience, but I calmed myself and kept my awareness grounded in the body.

My experience of taking Bufo was incredibly intense, unlike anything I had ever encountered with Ayahuasca, Psilocybin or San Pedro. The vapour or smoke was not unpleasant to inhale, and it had a unique smell. Within seconds of inhaling, my perceptions rapidly started to change. The shaman, Ness, began to appear as a very colourful and incredibly vibrant painting. I completely forgot to raise my hand and start counting on my fingers, as instructed.
Instead, I inhaled as much as I could and held my breath. The next thing I knew, I was lying down, surrounded by vibrant, colourful geometric patterns swirling around me. I could hear myself making sounds, but I wasn’t sure why or what they were related to. Any initial fear dissipated, replaced by a profound intensity. It felt like a type of exorcism, a powerful emotional purge. At times, it resembled a peak Ayahuasca experience, and at others, it went beyond this into realms that were inexplicable. There were moments of pure presence, without sound or sight, just consciousness. My sense of self had disappeared entirely, but it wasn’t frightening. It was very peaceful.
After about 20 minutes, my mind began to return, trying to make sense of what had happened and what was happening. Visions started to appear—loved ones, beautiful heavenly scenes, and glimpses of the future. It was all very beautiful. As the effects began to wear off, I heard beautiful, angelic voices in the middle of the room. The shaman and her assistants began to play music with guitars, singing bowls, and other instruments. It felt heavenly, a lovely way to reintegrate into everyday waking reality. Some of the chants were familiar, and I started to sing along. When I removed my eye mask, I saw the three facilitators surrounded by candles, singing and playing with all their hearts.

After everyone had come around, we gathered back into a circle and were treated to some delicious fruit, nuts, and chocolate. As we ate, we were given colouring pens and encouraged to convey our experiences on paper. Verbalising the experience was challenging enough, but attempting to capture it visually was even more so. However, the goal was not to accurately depict the experience but to express our emotional journey in whatever way felt right. After this, we shared our experiences verbally, with each participant having their unique journey. The shaman provided helpful feedback and reassurance, especially to those who had challenging experiences.
The experience had been so profound and peaceful, so to step onto the bustling streets of Barcelona at 1 a.m. was a stark contrast. However, the effects of Bufo had completely worn off by then, making the transition manageable. I left feeling grateful for having had such a beautiful and mystical experience with such wonderful people, and I am already planning my return. A week later, there was a follow-up Zoom integration meeting where we could discuss any issues that had arisen, providing a lovely way to reconnect with everyone and continue processing the experience.
The Bufo ceremony with Avalon Retreats is currently priced at 359 euros, which is very reasonable considering the exceptional level of care and guidance provided throughout the experience. The importance of safety and care cannot be overstated when dealing with 5 MEO-DMT, the most potent psychedelic compound currently known. The meticulous attention to detail, the presence of experienced facilitators, and the supportive environment all contribute to a secure and profoundly transformative journey. This ensures that participants can fully immerse themselves in the experience, knowing they are in capable and compassionate hands.

8 Essential Insights Before Embarking on a Bufo Ceremony
1. Preparedness for a Profound Spiritual Journey:
This sacred medicine contains 5-MeO-DMT, a powerful hallucinogen that can dissolve your ego and immerse you in a state of unity and profound consciousness. It is essential to approach this medicine with the utmost respect, allowing yourself ample time to prepare before embarking on this transformative journey.
2. Post-Ceremony Support:
Having a support system in place after the ceremony can be immensely helpful. Friends, family, or a therapist who understands the significance of your experience can offer comfort and help you process your journey.
3. Embrace the Unknown:
Preparation is crucial for a Bufo retreat. The key is to let go of control and fully surrender to the experience. This openness allows for a more profound, meaningful transformation, enabling emotions and sensations to flow unimpeded, fostering healing and insight.
4. Intentions Over Expectations:
Your journey with Bufo will be uniquely your own, shaped by your mental and emotional state. Setting clear intentions rather than rigid expectations can help you navigate the psychedelic landscape more effectively, ensuring a more enriching and manageable experience.

5. Integration for Lasting Change:
The profound effects of smoking the toad extend well beyond the ceremony itself. Integrating the insights gained into your daily life is vital for enduring transformation. This involves reflecting on your journey and applying its lessons to promote personal growth and improvement. You can also speak to a Psychedelic Integration Coach, who can help you integrate any challenging or difficult experiences.
6. Choose the Right Guide or Facilitator:
The experience with Bufo’s 5-MeO-DMT is incredibly powerful and can be overwhelming. Selecting a knowledgeable and compassionate guide or facilitator is essential. They can support you, ensure your safety, and help you navigate the journey, making the experience more meaningful and secure.
7. Mental and Emotional Readiness:
Assess your current mental and emotional state. While using Bufo has therapeutic potential, it can also amplify underlying issues. It’s important to approach the ceremony when you feel stable and ready to confront intense emotional experiences.
8. Diet and Lifestyle Considerations:
Some facilitators recommend specific dietary and lifestyle preparations before the ceremony. These might include fasting, abstaining from certain foods or substances, and engaging in meditation or yoga to prepare your body and mind.
Can a Bufo ceremony heal trauma?
Embarking on a Bufo retreat, which leverages the potent psychoactive compound 5-MeO-DMT found in the secretion of the Bufo Alvarius toad, offers a profound potential for healing past traumatic experiences. This unique psychedelic substance can significantly enhance neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Therefore, individuals can process and integrate traumatic memories more effectively, leading to greater emotional resilience and healing (Frontiers) (Safe Spirit).
The therapeutic journey with Bufo often starts with meticulous pre-ceremony preparations. These can include practices such as meditation and setting intentions, which help prepare participants mentally and emotionally for the intense experience ahead. Post-ceremony integration is equally critical, involving psychotherapy or counselling to consolidate the insights gained during the psychedelic experience. This phase leverages the heightened neuroplasticity induced by 5-MeO-DMT, potentially amplifying long-term healing and personal growth (Isa Lucia) (Casa Santa Isabel).
Scientific research has highlighted the promising potential of Bufo therapy for treating conditions like depression and anxiety. Studies conducted by institutions such as John Hopkins University and researchers like Alan Davis have shown that the mystical experiences induced by 5-MeO-DMT can foster significant psychosomatic and spiritual changes. These experiences are often characterised by a profound sense of interconnectedness and ego dissolution, which can lead to lasting therapeutic outcomes (Frontiers) (NCPM).
Moreover, the rapid and intense experiences facilitated by 5-MeO-DMT, which often include states of samadhi or unity consciousness, offer profound opportunities for emotional and psychological breakthroughs. These experiences can help individuals release deep-rooted fears and traumas, promoting a new sense of peace and connection (Safe Spirit) (Casa Santa Isabel).
In summary, a Bufo retreat harnesses the powerful effects of 5-MeO-DMT to transform lives through enhanced neuroplasticity and profound mystical experiences. With proper preparation and integration, participants can achieve significant healing and personal growth, more effectively addressing mental health conditions like depression and anxiety (Isa Lucia) (NCPM).
