Description of the Retreat

Lerab Ling is one of the leading centres of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning in Europe.

Blessed by the visits of numerous great masters of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, most notably His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2000 and 2008, Lerab Ling has established itself as one of the leading centres of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning in Europe.

The Temple at the heart of Lerab Ling was built to preserve the unique spiritual traditions, culture, and art of Tibetan Buddhism. Together with its sacred art and architecture, thriving community of monastic and lay Buddhist practitioners, and authoritative Buddhist study programmes, the temple is one of the most authentic centres of Tibetan Buddhism to be found in West today.

In many places today, people are recognizing that spiritual development is not a luxury, but a sheer necessity for our survival. Witness the almost desperate hunger and need everywhere for spiritual vision, and for the tools to negotiate the challenges of life, find happiness and understand and transform the mind. This is why the very existence of spiritual centres like Lerab Ling has now assumed truly vital importance, because it is on the accessibility of spiritual teachings and the building of a spiritual culture that the very future of humanity depends.

Open to all schools and traditions of Buddhist wisdom, and with the guidance and gracious patronage of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Rigpa offers those following the Buddhist teachings a complete path of study and practice, along with the environment they need to experience the teachings fully.

Lerab Ling Religious Congregation – In order to formalize the presence of the community and ensure its continuity, Sogyal Rinpoche encouraged its recognition by the state as a religious congregation. A decree from the Interior Ministry granted legal status on January 29, 2002. The congregation includes ordained members (monks and nuns) as well as lay members who join in the practices and the centre’s activities.

“In the stillness and silence of retreat, we glimpse and return to that deep inner nature, that we have so long ago lost sight of amid the busyness and distraction of our minds.” Sogyal Rinpoche

Lerab Ling welcomes anyone who wishes to take a break from their daily life and dedicate some time to contemplation and reflection, regardless of their spiritual tradition or beliefs. Rigpa instructors who have completed a three-year retreat under the guidance of Sogyal Rinpoche, individually guide each person and support them throughout their stay.

A Supportive Pro gramme – The emphasis is on personal practice however, group meditation sessions are offered twice a day (except Sunday afternoon). They include time for questions and answers. It is also possible to meet individually with the instructors and meet the monastic and lay members of the Lerab Ling community.

Resources – During your retreat you will have access to the temple shrine rooms for your personal practice, as well as to a library of audio and video teachings on meditation, the fundamentals of Buddhism, healing, finding peace, relationships and overcoming depression, in order to support your personal study.

Rigpa students – Personal Retreat can be an invaluable way of deepening your personal practice in the perfect retreat environment of Lerab Ling. You will receive advice on setting up your personal study and practice schedule. And, if you wish, you may join the practising sangha for daily group practices in the temple. You will have access to the temple shrine rooms for your personal practice and a to a selection of Sogyal Rinpoche’s teachings for your personal study. Nyingma

In 1971 he studied Comparative Religion at the University of Cambridge in England. Rinpoche has been teaching for over thirty years and continues to travel widely in Europe, America, Australia and Asia. More information

– Silence is an essential way of creating a retreat atmosphere – Periods of silence can be expected, and certain areas will be reserved for silence throughout the day.

– We discourage you from bringing mobile phones, books, videos, cassettes or CDs other than those about the Dharma, as well as newspapers or magazines. There is no Internet connection available on-site.

Medical care – Lerab Ling cannot offer medical care, consultations, or medicines, as it has neither the staff nor the appropriate facilities to do so.

The closest doctor is in Le Caylar – 11 km from Lerab Ling. For more serious problems, medical facilities are located in Lodève, 15 km away. If you are currently being treated for a medical condition, or if you have allergies of any kind (insect stings and bites, asthma, etc.) please bring your own medication with you.

For urgent communication – there is an Internet café in Lodève and in Lunas. Use of the Internet and checking emails at Lerab Ling is restricted to Rigpa managers (e.g. National Directors, Teaching Services Directors).
